ONCE UPON A TIME in the Columbia Recording Studio things were just not going all that good. Something about this song was just not clicking. It wasn't that the band wasn't good, it was just that I knew something was missing..... We were trying too hard to make it 'commercial.' Then 'Mi Hermano' Chico Vasquez came up with the idea of slowing the tempo down and playing the piano part on the organ. Ray Pohlman and I sat down and added a little bit of mellow dual guitar... and it all came together... As my father taught me, "Listen to the people you work with, because sometimes their ideas are better than yours." This was the first of my records to go overseas to England and I made enough from this record so I could afford to get married... When Mitch Miller met my new bride Minnie, his first comment to her was,"Congratulations. If he doesn't make you happy, let me know and I'll kick his ass." AND THAT'S THE HAPPY ENDING...
