1972 - Zane Ashton (Bill Aken) - "Julie Girl"

Posted by Bill Aken
1972 - Thirteen years after I recorded the original version of 'Julie Girl' with my father, Dave Michaels and Brian Friedman put a 32 piece symphony orchestra behind me to do this updated arrangement. I am not sure if Harp and Oboe had ever been used before in country music but my producers gave me the 'green light' to do it my way.... We took a total of nine hours in the United Artists Studio to get this the way we wanted it. I think 'The Bean-Counters' had a nervous breakdown. Time changes, Oboes, and a 'Harp' being used in Country Music were unheard of back then, but my co-arranger Denny Reynolds said "What the hell !!! Let's go for it." So I reached back into my 'rock and roll' days and went back into my high-range vocal mode. My 'whistle' instrumental break was a spur of the moment thing which I intended as a guide for a solo instrument to be added later, but Denny said, "Keep the whistle just as it is." Denny was a great friend and is sorely missed... and a warm thank you to Dave Michaels and Brian Friedman, who always believed in me even when the rest of the music world put me on the 'back burner.'
